Introduction To Videogames: Blog Tasks

 1. In October 1958, Physicist William Higinbotham created what is thought to be the first video game. It was a very simple tennis game, similar to the classic 1970s video game Pong, and it was quite a hit at a Brookhaven National Laboratory open house.

2. The main difference between old and modern games lies in technology, graphics, and gameplay complexity. Old games featured 2D graphics, low-quality processing power, and repetitive gaming experiences.

3.

  • Engaging Storylines. Successful games often feature compelling narratives that captivate players' attention, providing a sense of purpose and motivation. ...

  • 24/7 Player Support. ...
  • Rewarding Achievements.

4. Video games have often been portrayed negatively in media and popular culture, associated with violence, addiction, and social isolation. These narratives can shape public perception, leading to a belief that games are inherently harmful.

6. First, they offer a sense of achievement and reward. When we solve a puzzle, win a race, or complete a level, our brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and satisfaction. This biochemical response is a primary reason for our affection towards games.

7. Its critics say it's addictive and dangerous. Its 125m players disagree. Who's right? Fortnite, which took the gaming world by storm last year, is now a global phenomenon, with a reported 125 million users – but while its popularity grows, a storm rages about the video game's effect on children.

8. I am a well read, well travelled, and well educated man in my early 40s, with a doctorate in law, and interests in art, philosophy and science, and gaming is my favourite pastime, by a mile. Ditto my wife, who comes from a similar background. The interactivity, and the related escapism provided by video games are priceless in these trying times. Not just listening or watching stories, but influencing them too, experiencing the feelings of prot… I agree because it helps people escape reality.

Watching the (very good) series Freaks and Geeks, made in 2000 but set in 1980, it was noticeable how much more the teenage characters identified with what music they listened to compared to even 20 years later when the series was made, let alone 40 years later as it now is. I think the importance of music in what young people talk about and devote their time to has definitely dwindled even as that of video games has risen. I agree because young people love video games.
